SCDHA and Stark Co. Homeless Connect
On Thursday, August 25, 2011, SCDHA participated in the Stark County Project Homeless Connect. This nationwide project was set up as a day devoted to serving homeless families, individuals, and veterans by providing free services, assistance, and food to Stark County’s homeless population. SCDHA participated in the event by providing oral health care products to approximately 400 participants attending the event. SCDHA distributed products such as: 300 kits containing mouth rinse and tongue cleaners (donated by Breath Rx); Colgate toothpaste (as donated by Anne Guignon, RDH, MPH); 60 oral health kits with Crest, Glide, Oral B brushes and Crest Pro Health rinse (as donated by Millie Venus, P&G Territory Manager); additional products purchased through monetary donations via generous SCDHA members like Michele LaBasi.
Thank you to all of those SCDHA members and SSC DH students who volunteered at this event. A special thank you to SCDHA member, Mary Alice Chivers, who organized the SCDHA volunteer efforts and managed the collecting of all of the donated items. If you are interested in more information about Project Homeless Connect of Stark County or would like to volunteer at future events please e-mail or call Mary Alice Chivers.

Did You Know. . .

Permissible Practices Documentation for Dental Hygienists
Please be advised that the Ohio State Dental Board (OSDB) requires every dental hygienist to provide and maintain specific documentation in each office or facility in which they are employed. The documentation does NOT need to be filed with the OSDB, but must be maintained at each place of employment in their employee file. Please click here for the Permissible Practices Documentation for Dental Hygienists.

Message from the Past-President. . .
Did you know that of the 7,779 dental hygienists licensed to practice in Ohio, only 849 are members of ODHA? This means that only 11% of RDHs in the state of Ohio belong to their professional organization, compared to the 80% of licensed dentists who are members of ODA.
Why is this important to note? To Ohio Legislators it indicates the level of commitment and support that undergirds each of the respective professions. Bottom line: more constituents represent a possibility of more votes. . . Legislatures most often spend their time and energy on issues that impact the largest represented group or population.
In addition, this statistic presents quite a disadvantage concerning the financial components that are necessary for legislative decision making. ODHA employs lobbyists that work on our behalf: personally meeting with legislators to discuss the potential impact of decision making related to dental health and the profession of dental hygiene in our state. The financial contributions of only 11% of all RDHs in Ohio are simply not enough to sustain the burden of the potential impact of the proposals established by Ohio Dental Association Task Force on Auxiliary Utilization and Access to Care.
As a dental hygienist, what do you envision for your future? Can you afford not to be a member of ODHA?
